Santa Croce - XMAS Market, Marathon, Hail

The architect of the marble façade of Santa Croce was Niccolò Matas, a member of the Jewish community. He wanted to give recognition of his religion  in his work, so he had the Star of David engraved on the façade of Santa Croce.

Before Matas died he asked that his body be buried on the doorstep of the main entrance into Santa Croce,  so the façade would be his burial monument. 

Michelangelo is also buried inside Santa Croce, as are Machiavelli, and Galileo, who was tried by the Inquisition and not allowed a Christian burial until 95 years after his death.
