We bought the little red jeep. I drove it to St Louis and went to Scott Air Force base. I bought a Marine Corps license plate holder and remounted it on the jeep.

I left it at Mid America Airport for a month and then drove to see friends for a mini reunion in St Louis. Our friends thought this situation comical.

The interesting thing is a took a photo at the airport of the jeep before I left it for a month and never noticed the upside down plate.

Lions Within Two Feet of Our Open Jeep - And Us!

A pride of lions walked by both sides of our open vehicle.  Made me nervous.  Everyone told me that they would ignore us - but what if we ran into a lion who did not read the memo?

I would have preferred a gun, but no guns allowed in South Africa.  I wanted to bring a knife but we heard horror stories about big fines for bringing in a knife.

So in the end I purchased a large phillips head screwdriver.  It was hard to take photos and videos while holding the screwdriver.

I startled one lion when I moved to take a photo - she and I locked eyes. But she went on about her hunt.

My wife and Vicki also locked eyes - a bit disconcerting.

For the record, no lions attacked - probably because of my screwdriver.

Rhino Following Us

We were following this rhino in our open jeep. He was not happy about it.  He broke off into the brush and we lost site of him.

We were driving down the trail shortly thereafter and I heard a loud noise.  He was following close behind us.

Bull Elephant in Musth Following a Giraffe, We follow the Elephant

Bull Elephant in Musth Following a Giraffe followed by us.

A giraffe burst out of the brush. Something is chasing it said our guide.

We waited to see the lions. But it was a bull elephant.

The lion was in Musth, where they are extremely aggressive and hyper sexual.

It was not clear whether our elephant was following the giraffe to fight it, or was looking for love in all the wrong places.

The giraffe moved on down the narrow road over a dam grade. The bull elephant followed. And we followed the elephant.

I was not too sure this was a good idea.  Our 24 year old guide was knowledgeable but I thought a bit aggressive.  But the elephant ignored us and followed the giraffe till they both disappeared in the bush.

Following the Bull Who Was Following the Giraffe

A giraffe burst out of the brush, moving fast. We could hear something chasing it, and got ready for lions.

But it was being chased by a bull elephant.

Our guide said the elephant is in Musth, which makes them hyper aggressive and hyper horny.

We were not sure if the elephant wanted to fight the giraffe, or mate with him or her.

Perhaps elephant was looking for love in all the wrong places.

We followed the elephant who followed the giraffe.  I was a bit concerned that he might turn on us - and we were on a narrow trail with no way to turn.

But eventually they moved off the trail. Don't know if the consumated whatever it was the elephant wanted to do.

An imperfect metaphor for our current political situation.  The Elephant - the Republican - is pursing the giraffe / Donkey - the Democrat. It gets ugly down in the weeds.

Who knows how it will turn out?

Musth or must /ˈmʌst/ (Urdu: مست) is a periodic condition in bull (male) elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosteronelevels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. However, whether this hormonal surge is the sole cause of musth, or merely a contributing factor, is unknown. Scientific investigation of musth is problematic because even the most placid elephants become highly violent toward humans and other elephants during musth.
